Thursday, 7th August 2025. We had a good turn-out for a Thursday- 14 people, so for once we could finish all the weeding ready for the spray team to finish off the more open areas away from our plants.
This area isn't very big, but it's difficult. There's a lot of road metal around, which makes kneeling uncomfortable, and the weeds are very good t hiding in the plants, especially the carex, which is a grass, not a tree, and therefore doesn't have a nice single stem that we can weed up to.
This path was made by the Council to connect the then-new subdivision of St. Kilda to, essentially, Cambridge High School. Before the path was made, students faced a major hike along existing roads, or using a car. This path makes the walk quite easy. It's turned out to be popular with adults too. Whenever we go there, we are greeted by several dog-walkers, runner and cyclists.
To get there from town, go along Swayne Road, past the school and over the bridge across the expressway. Turn right at Appleby Rd and go to its end. It's a no-exit street. The St.Kilda end is at Wells Place.
The initial planting was done by parents, teachers and pupils from Goodwood School. They came in two successive groups. We supplied plants, then stood around and watched, basically. They didn't need help or advice. The whole operation went smoothly.
