Thursday, 19 the March already, and we're paying attention to the Rimu Grove. We're cleaning out weeds and the ubiquitous privet and blackberry. The dry soil has sent some of the roots very deep in their search for water and weeding is therefore hard work. We were glad when morning tea time rolled around and we could enjoy our first Easter eggs of the year....

Tuesday 24th February 2026 was a bright sunny day just like summer ought to be.We went to the little Ruru St. planting, which had grown weeds with the same enthusiasm as the other places we attend to. There were only a dozen of us, but the planting in Ruru Street is small and the weeds were mostly grass which pulled out fairly easily. In addition, the site slopes steeply, so we don't have to bend very far.We had the job done in about an hour and had morning tea a bit earlier than usual. The sun ...

This week 10th and 12th of February, we worked at Payne Park and around the corner at the paddock that was once used by RDA. The big problem here is buttercup growing in the middle of the carex plants. It is very hard to get out of the grass. We do what we can, and we're investigating sprays. The paddock will be overrun by convolvulus if we're not careful, and we're investigating spray for that too. The Council's mower helps to keep it down, but it's better if we can eliminate it.On Tuesday 17th...

They both get called Tea Tree so is there a difference between these two very common New Zealand native trees? The answer is yes. The Latin name for Manuka is Leptospermum scoparium, and for Kanuka, Kunzea ericoides. But they don’t grow in the wild with Latin labels attached, so how to tell the difference? Growing in boggy ground it, will be Manuka because Kanuka does not like wet feet, but both will tolerate dry sites. Eventually Kanuka will grow taller than Manuka by several metr...

Thursday, 16th October, and we've finally been able to get around to planting on the paddock above Riding for the Disabled. They don't use it any more, as the land is positively soggy, and the Council asked us to plant it rather than have their mower struggle to mow it and get stuck in the process. It's late for planting, but we're relying on the copious water supply to keep the plants in good health over the summer. The area is down the hill from Payne Park, and can be reached easily by using th...

There are two parks in Cambridge where dogs can be exercised off lead, one in Leamington and this one on the corner of Thornton Rd and McLean St in Cambridge. We opened October by going to this dog park. It's a low-lying place and water has accumulated at one end of a hollow which was dug as a drain many years ago and has filled up over time. We cleared the plants for spraying and will expand the circles around them with line trimmers. We had another good turnout, so the work was done quickly. It...

Today, Tuesday 16th September, we went to the edge of Payne Park where we have a little planting which commemorates Jim McKnight, a long-term member until his death a few years ago.It also does duty as a cover for part of the park that the Council's lawnmower can't reach without serious risk of sliding down the hillside. As usual, we weeded around the plants before spraying. The plants are growing well. The kauri are shooting skyward and the flaxes and other trees and shrubs are filling up the sp...

One of our members, Jane Moodie, had the idea of planting along the fenceline of the Brian Mayo Reserve between the drain and the Rimu Grove. We've spent some time there weeding around the plants so that they are nor damaged by spraying. Our planting is doing well, but so are the weeds.Last Thursday, 11th September 2025, we finished the job for this cycle, but not without some adventure as things didn't go quite to plan. There had been a lot of rain previously, and although the day was fine...
